J.K. Rowling is back with her magic, this time with Fantastic Beasts and where to Find Them. This birthday I got about 10 books and one of them was this beautiful royal blue hardbound copy. At first, I was a little skeptical to buy this one as troubled memories from the Cursed Child came back. But then, It’s J.K. Rowling, who has been a constant companion of mine from last 10 years. So why not give her magic another chance?
5 hours and two cups of tea later, I was mesmerized again and everything was back to great in the Harry Potter world. The characters were new and refreshing, the story line was great and there was Gellert Grindelwald, the only character in the whole potter series I never perfectly understood. And this time also, there was a shroud of mystery over him.
The story of Fantastic Beasts revolves around explorer and Magizoologist Newt Scamander. Newt’s profession involves capturing the most fantastic beasts of the Magic world, preserving and nurturing them. He has recently finished a round-the-globe trip in search of the rarest magical creatures.
Newt was passing through New York for a brief stopover and that’s when things turned upside down. Newt misplaces his case where all the fantastic beasts he had caught have been kept. And some of them escaped into the New York city! A trouble for everyone, Muggles and Magic folk alike, Newt now must catch all his beasts and also save the city from Obscurus, a dark force that threatens to kill everything in its way. But who would unleash Obscurus in the first place? And what is Grindewald’s role in the story? I will leave that up to you guys to find out when you read the book or watch the movie.
Helping Newt in this tricky situation is a banished auror Tina, her sister Queenie and a Muggle Jacob, who got dragged into one of the biggest adventure of his life, just like I was captured in this beauty.
So, why you should pick Fantastic Beasts is very simple. First, it is not another story in Potter series, its a prequel. So for all those who are still thinking that they will be disappointed just like Cursed Child, fear not. Fantastic Beasts is a like a fresh boost into the whole Harry Potter scene, so I am sure you will definitely like it.
Second, the characters and plot line is too delicious. You will definitely fall in love with all the twists and turns, especially the Grindelwald angle. The chase scenes for all the fantastic beats are good as well, the skill and brains Newt uses every time to catch a beast are hilarious.
Third, the Fantastic Beasts themselves! Though my imagination is a bit restricted, JK Rowling words provide you enough information to imagine the beast. I would be definitely catching the movie as well just to see the how the makers have adapted all the beats into the movie. And my favorite out of all were Niffer, the cheeky rascal, and the magnificent Frank.
The only issue with Fantastic Beasts was the play script just like Cursed Child. Though we book bloggers are pretty much used to it, but for a not so regular reader, it might create some issues while reading. Though the play script is always descriptive, from the emotion to the light stage, it still doesn’t go down well with all kinds of readers. But all in all, Fantastic Beasts and where to find them is a must read for everyone, a book that you should not miss!
